Understanding the "Base of the Pyramid"

The four billion people at the lowest economic level around the world have never experienced things most of us take for granted today, like modern kitchen appliances to make breakfast, a bathroom inside the home, and a car to drive to work. These "base of the pyramid" consumers have a per capita income of less than $1500 per year.

Yet at SC Johnson we believe there is a huge opportunity at the base of the pyramid – an opportunity to bring sustainable livelihoods to the community while at the same time bringing sustainable new business to the Company.

SC Johnson brought the Base of the Pyramid™ protocol pilot to life in the form of several new partnership enterprises created in Kibera and other areas of Nairobi, Kenya. The goal of these efforts has been to fine tune the business model and grow the business through small-scale enterprises that are then broadened to new communities.
